EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
